Overheating laptops can cause damage to the internal parts of your laptop, so should be serviced on a regular basis to keep them running cool. How often you service your laptop will depend on how you use it, but we recommend that most of our clients get a laptop service every 1-2 years. If dust is allowed to build up, then it forms an insulating layer trapping heat inside your laptop which can cause irreversible damage.
If your laptop:
- Shuts down unexpectedly,
- Is very hot to touch underneath (i.e you could not hold your hand on the hottest part for more than a few seconds),
- The fan sounds noisy or is always running very fast,
- Is more than three years old and has never had an internal service,
then you should call us to arrange a service as soon as possible.
What does a laptop internal service entail?
The primary objective of an internal service is to remove dust and/or debris from the fan assembly, heatsink and vents, to increase the airflow and the laptop’s ability to expel heat.
This is done by taking the laptop apart, right down to its individual components and then removing the fan assembly and heatsink off the motherboard. The old thermal compound is removed from the heatsink and CPU and GPU. Once this is done the fan assembly can be dismantled, foreign objects removed and then cleaned. We lubricate the fan with a specialised computer fan lubricant, and check all other internal components. Once cleaned, new high quality thermal paste is applied and the laptop reassembled. We then test your laptop and monitor the internal temperatures to ensure it is now operating within acceptable ranges.
